Summary: ericsson t290 a good enough for light usage. Comment: Good news first.
Cingular has been resonable in service provision, I purchased my service cards at WalMart so you can tell im a major tightwad. The go phone is 25 cents per minute and is a bit spendy unless you just use it in the car. So I do like the service plan, I don't have to write a check. I have had 4 Ericsson phones and this one is the best so far, it has a good strong speaker phone and holds a charge very well.
The Bad News.
Cingular purchased At&t and forced me to purchase a new phone. Not cool, but i had a t259a with the same parts and accessories so that worked out. Some times i plug this in and it doesn't charge so i have to mess with the charger coord. Also i need a camera and this doesn't have one built in. I tried to get a 3rd party usb cable and never could get one to work. I need to try the ericsson flavored c-11.

Summary: Get a free unlocked Motorola RAZR v3i instead! Comment: Why settle for less, or commit yourself to a specific cellular provider and service plan, when you can get a complimentary unlocked top of the line Motorola RAZR v3i cell phone that works with any cellular service provider and any SIM card. I got mine free at this web site: reallyfree2u.com/razrv3i

Summary: Good and Bad points Comment: The good points are that it is light, compact, the black colour goes well in formal situations (office, black tie etc) and very simple to use.
It is not overcomplicated by features no one ever uses.
The screen has good LCD definition, and the sound is good, with good ringtones, pictures and vibrator (silent setting).
It is small, so you don't even realise it is in your pocket.
The key drawback for me is that the buttons are very small for man size fingers, and this makes texting a long and slow affair. But then I am no text junkie, so it is not a huge drawback for me.
Batteries last well, and I only recharge every third or fourth day.

Summary: The 290a l does not work if the GSM signal is weak, when others work Comment: My wife and I bought two (2) SonyEricsson T290a's, during September 2005. The GSM signal is weak in our house (and in the office of the cell phone company). My wife noticed that other people in our house, with phones made by other manufacturers, on the same GSM network, had signals, when our T290a's had no signal. Be sure the GSM signal is very strong, before you buy this model! The T290a has some other nice features, but the main reason to buy a cell phone is to talk and you cannot talk, if it doesn't have a strong signal.
