Summary: Perfect phone, but don't order from nokiausa Comment: I've had the 6820 from back in the days of AT&T Wireless and absolutely loved it: QWERTY keyboard that is exceptionally easy to use, Bluetooth, GSM/works in europe, great battery life, and it's compact and secure.
I mention "secure" in the sense that the settings stay where you lock them. I've had so many phones that change ring volume settings, turn themselves off, unlock themselves or even call people when the phone is in my front pocket. This phone is small enough to carry in my pocket (instead of the lame hip-holsters)and my pants don't end up calling my friends or colleagues.
After some time, the 6820 inevitably broke, and by then it was off the market. Oddly, it was the ringer that broke--the flip mechanism is quite robust.
But then I was stuck without a phone. I sure didn't want a dingleberry, or a Treo. I would always joke at those folks by holding a notebook up to my ear and saying "Hello?" I want a phone, not a small laptop that can read .xls files. But the choices were slim.
I really wanted QWERTY because using SMS can be really convenient and I can't stand using T9. And I needed bluetooth for the car, and GSM for europe.
My only choice was to try that new Samsung SGH-D307 with the flip out keyboard. I was shocked how poor that is. The menu system is so dis-integrated that as one review puts it "you have to actively ignore what the buttons say, and use buttons that indicate things you DON'T want to do." Talk about cognitive dissonance. Oh, and the QWERTY doesn't work for anything other than SMS. So you can't even use it for entering addresses. QWERTY is supposed to let you avoid T9 predictive text, but the Samsung is so ill-developed, QWERTY only works for SMS and IM. Uugh.
There was literally no decent solution on the market until the 6822 was released. The only downside to the origial 6820 was its mediocre camera and screen resolution, both of which are addressed in the 6822.
Just don't order through nokiausa--it's customer service is so infuriatingly poorly run that you'll pop a few blood vessels. My order for this in-stock product languished for 10 days. Yes, I even upgraded to FedEx next-day, but nokia had no problem with my order being in the "not yet processed" state. Hmmm? So I call in several times find out about the delay and they would say that the order was not authorized because "the address information was wrong." I'm pretty sure I know my own address, and having my order number, I could see I had not made a typo.
So I called AMEX and they (of course) confirmed my billing address, but moreover said they hadn't declined my card due to AVS mismatch. Hmmm. Did nokia even try to process my order? I doubt it. I even had a nokiausa supervisor hang up on me when I asked her name for reference.
So after many calls and several hours of my time, I couldn't get to the root of the problem. Customer service couldn't help because the problem was allegedly in billing, but yet they wouldn't allow me to talk to billing. "That's not an option." the supervisors would tell me. They would assure me that their billing department would call me, but that never happened. I could never find out what billing was saying to AMEX. But again, according to AMEX, they never declined my card so either nokiausa billing department was lying about an AVS problem with my order, or they are so broken they were submitting someone else's information. In any case, try as I might, the 'problem' couldn't be identified, much less solved, so I had no choice but to give up. What a huge waste of time.
Bottom line: the 6822 is a fabulously small QWERTY, bluetooth, multimedia camera, GSM phone with no extraneous features or extra size. I heartily recommend buying it. The Finns know how to build a great phone. They're just not as successful as running a US order and customer service center that you can count on.

Summary: I waited for this phone! Comment: I bought my first Nokia 6822 back in 2004, and droped it in the bathm tub while cleaning :(
The Cingular Store was not carrying this phone when I went to get a new one, so I settled for some $25 Nokia until the new 6822 came out. As it turned out, the phone was available but Cingular did not carry it, or Best Buy!! I found it on amazon!
I love this phone. It allows you to type easier and that is the bottom line. Nokia also makes a great phone that sounds good and is user friendly. I always buy Nokia - they just make great quality phones.

Summary: Great SMS phone Comment: If you are looking at this phone, odds are you really want the QWERTY keyboard.
It works like a charm. The flip out style keyboard looks flimsy, but it is not. It is more robust than any flip phone I have ever seen or used. This phone is everything a txter needs.
However, you do loose a lot of features with this phone that you could have with other. It has, hands down, the worst screen and camera I have ever used. I happen to not care about those things. I am of the opinion that a phone should serve one purpose, and that is to make calls. The reception depends on the carrier, so I'm not going to touch on that.
One great piece of design is the 5 way navigation button. This reduces the need for 5 buttons and puts it into a single, elegantly placed, joystick. This is, next to the keyboard, my most favorite feature of this phone. Along with the rest of the buttons, all is very intuitive. It also has Bluetooth. Some people might not care, or some might find it handy. I happen to find it handy. I purchased a PALM TX to use with this phone, like a smart phone minus the suckage, and it connected great. You turn the Bluetooth on, mess with the PALM a little, and your in. In short, it rocks.
As to battery life, this also PWNS. My last phone, a Kyocera KX2, didn't have a battery. You unplug it and before you are out the door, you get an error message that tells you to buy a better phone. The 6820 must have some soft of solar cell technology. I never have to plug it in the wall. I call this a power free phone if you will. Granted I am not glued to the phone, but You still get amazing battery life out of this thing.
Basically this phone is purely for those who want to type quickly. If that is what you are looking for, like myself, get this phone. If you want anything else out of it, do not. I gave this a rating of 5 for its primary purpose, the keyboard, which I happen to like, a lot.

Summary: AWESOME PHONE Comment: I have been true to nokia for the longest time there are a few reasons for that....... 1. user friendly phone book, (I dont have to have 3 entries for a person who has a cell, home and work phone.) 2. Great prices for their phones. 3. Great features for their phones (especially bluetooth and IR port). I started out with the 6800 and thought the flip open keyboard was awesome, then i upgrated to the nokia 6820. When the 6822 came out, I was psyched unfortunately the only carrier that had that phone was cincinnati bell. Soo, I made the mistake of buying a phone via ebay. I paid 250.00 for an used unlocked phone that came out of the UK. The features were awesome, a better camera phone, faster internet, a screensaver for the phone. The problem was that i kept on dropping calls left and right and then I had a problem with the IR port. I thought it was my carrier (cingular). I stopped by the Nokia store in Chicago and found the phone for $189.00. They have a limited supply and tell me they can't keep that phone in stock. They phone works great now, and I rarely drop calls. I Love this phone and wouldn't recommend any other phone!!! If you buy this phone make sure that it is a US sponsored phone because if not, you will not be able to use AIM or ICQ on that phone. Also you will have way better reception with that phone!! Good Luck and ENJOY!!!

Summary: best phone ever! Comment: it has a very solid structure and a very solid software system. the bluetooth capabilities are wounderful. you can leave the bluetooth on all the time and pair with devices easily and quickly. i sometimes have compatibility issues with my riends phones but it usually happens becuase they're razr sucks at bluetooth. the fold out keyboard it amazing, there is a light on and off button to light it all up in the dark. you can use a bunch of different istandt messagaing services including AIM. it also has GREAT calendar software that you can sync with microsoft outlook or what ever else you have on your computer. also the software nokia provides for your computer is really great. at first when the phone came out the software was kinda sucky and buggy but since then they have worked really hard to make their computer software work and it has become more and more usefull. you can download programs off the nokia website to port over to the phone too. the digital camera is not super high quality but it works well in a pinch and good size for sending multimedia messages and such. one down side is that the video format it takes only runs on the nokia software (as far as i know). maybe there is a file convertered out there. it doesnt have a real big screen or polyphics but utility wise i think this is the best phone ever. i promised my self i would keep getting them for as long as i can.
