Summary: exactly what i needed and wanted. Thank you Palm!
Comment: I was considering buying an iPhone. I had the money and was ready to purchase one but decided not to. I took a look at what I needed:

GPS Functionality for my car
PDA Functionality
Mac and PC Compatibility
Reasonable Battery options (removeable, okay battery life)
Easy to use
No commitment to AT&T

What does the iphone have? it has the 2nd, 3rd, and last one. GPS? Strike One. Battery options? Strike Two. AT&T Commitment. Strike Three.

I went to the Palm store nearby the Apple Store in SF and went in and asked about one of their phones. Their associate pointed me to the unlocked Treo 680. It had exactly what I wanted. GPS Functionality is great with the add-on device, pda functions are great, mac and pc compatibility exactly what i needed, ease of battery swaps, easy to use, and best of all, NO COMMITMENT to AT&T! If I had bought the device from AT&T, I would save $200 but be forced to pay for a $40 a month data plan that I DO NOT USE for a minimum of 6 months. Hmm, that comes out to $240 of data plans that I don't want. And the phone would be locked as well. And plus, AT&T would try to sell me their $10 a month telenav gps thing that requires the $40 data plan each month. will I pay for that? NO!!! At palm, I paid $400 for my unlocked Treo 680, and $250 for the add on GPS device that stores all the maps locally on a mini SD Card. $650 one time fare and nothing more and it does exactly what I bought it for. I later bought a $60 charging dock and an extra $50 battery, also from Palm. $760 for the following:
Unlocked Treo 680
Travel AC Adapter
Charging Dock with its own AC Adapter
Two USB Sync Cables
Car Charger for Treo 680
GPS Device
Dual Head Car Charger for Treo 680 and GPS Device
SD Card to USB Adapter
Free Travel Battery Charger
1GB mini-SD Card with SD Adapter that contains all the maps
2nd Battery
In Car Dashboard Mount for Treo 680

Considering most built in Car GPS devices cost $500-$600 anyways, I paid $760 for all the above and I can use the GPS functionality in different cars. No GPS rental fees when I rent a car, cuz I got my own! Great Phone Palm! I love it! Now if only the iPhone could do all this...

Summary: love the phone...
Comment: I had the 650 but a time went on gave it to my co-worker because of the bulky antenna(no a good fashion style). The 680 hold lots of memory and (in my opinion) much thinner than the 650. Do to it being unlocked I had to purchase a data plan with t-mobile for internet service (where's the wifi)? 680 has pocket tunes (love different skin chocies) and 650 had real player. I noticed the 680 was able to download java and another internet browser (Opera). Have to download the java 1st.

I <3 my tero 680!!

Summary: Palm Treo 680
Comment: My old cell phone battery was going out and my old Palm T5 battery was not holding a charge very well either so the Palm Treo 680 was a good choice for me. It has the capabilities that I needed from Palm and also was a match for my AT&T service.

Although it is an unlocked phone I did not need it to be as I already was using AT&T as my service provider, but it would be a good choice for anyone who is looking for a Palm/phone combination

I was able to upload all my old Palm programs and convert all my old phone information without any problems. The SIMS card was easy to replace and so far I have not found any problems.

I have probably used both the Palm and the phone more since I have had the Treo than I had used either one before I purchased it.

I already had a 16G iTouch so I did not need the iPhone although that would have been my next choice but I would still have needed a replacement for my Palm.

I like it and so far have not seem any problem. I also purchased a Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Card at the same time and use it for extra storage when needed but so far it has not been necessary.

Summary: Treo 650 vs treo 680
Comment: Ok here my 2 ct's...

1. I had a treo 650 for a couple of years. Pretty good device after I had mad a custom rom. The result was a much larger working memory for programs to run. Most programs were not so much a problem, but nice things like TomTom were testing the device's capabilities. Which resulted in crashes once in a while. Or you had to reset the device before starting the program to retain your much needed precious memory.
Ok why am i telling you this? With the treo 680 no more of that. Huge internal working memory makes this device much more stable. So for only this feature, this device is a nice upgrade.

2. Size on paper is not that much of a difference with the treo 650. But it feels so much smaller and lighter. It really is nicer overall. People likes the looks of it, while the treo 650 was referred to as a fridge...

3. Battery, lots of complaints here. But not really true. Be sure you have the latest update. I have 2.12 ROW. I use this thing heavily and it will get you through two days of hard work. My HTC S730 lasted only 1 day for example. It is not bad. Just bought an upgrade battery 1600mh form Seido, which probably keeps my precious alive for 3 days. Keep in mind that push email drains your battery quickly, just like any other phone (charge every day). Consider the auto sync feature.

4. Only gprs...so for internet not so good, same as the treo 650. Still great for email. Exchange works very well. Only thing I cannot do is invite others for an appontment, other options are the same as on windows smartphones.

5. Speed, musch faster than other smartphones i have used. The treo 650 feels faster though. The treo 680 sometimes have to clear its bigger memory (for programs) just like the treo 650. But since the memory is bigger it stalls longer. We are talking 2 seconds here. This does happen occaisssionally. Overall faster then the treo 650 because of the abcense of resets. So its stability vs instant response. Keep in mind comparing the treo 680 with any windows phone...the treo 680 is lightning fast.

6. Softwarewise the treo 680 is loaded. With docs to go, pocket tunes...

7. Build quality. No squeeks. Heard rumors on the net that the 680 can have micro cracks after 2 years of use.

8. SAR rating half of the treo 650 and much other smartphones out there Call quality and reception is much better than the 650 and HTC's I know.

At the current price this is an absolute buy. I am really happy with the device. For serious users and pro-consumers this is great. Because of the excellent keyboard and software it is your office everywhere. Good luck.
