Summary: Still needs work, but overall a good smartphone
Comment: Upgrading from the Treo 650, it is true that there isn't much new. Also issues such as the horrible battery duration and non-megapixel camera leave one frustrated. But the fact remains that the Treo 680 is one of the best smartphones on the market, particularly if you want good PDA functionality or are a PalmOS devotee.

So I accept the current Palm reality and adapt by buying 2 additional batteries. Not elegant, but it works. That doesn't mean that I won't tell Palm "Guys get your act together and come out with something far better!"

Summary: Great PDA, Not So Great Phone
Comment: I had a Palm TX which I loved, but didn't like having to go to WiFi sites for the web. I also had a Moto V557 phone which is the best cell phone I've ever owned. I purchased the Treo for the best of both worlds.

I like the Treo 680, but I had to read all of the instructions, call customer service and practice using certain features to not be frustrated with the phone. For example, I had difficulty answering the phone using the touch screen and had to practice pressing the small send button. (Which I usually missed while in a rush to answer the phone.)

I like the web because it's fast enough that I don't miss the WiFi. I had to get used to the fact that many web sites aren't small enough for the phone, but it's excellent for using Google maps, looking up business and giving the number for easy dial (just tap the blue line), checking bank accounts, online orders, movies, weather and especially the news. Email is good too with the Palm software. I didn't use Express or GetGood email. I absolutely love the chat setting on the messaging.

Now, the phone is another story. I miss the ease of dialing a traditional cell. My Bluetooth does not work well with the 680. People typically tell me that they can't hear me so I now use a corded ear bud. The Bluetooth doesn't work with the voice dial feature that is purchased separately. You can't insert hard pauses with phone numbers that require you to dial extensions. There is no way to delete one digit at a time if you misdial a number. You have to leave the phone dialing page and return to redial. The phone dials slowly if there are other programs running. And lastly, you can't check your calendar or other features after answering the phone if the key pad was locked when you answered the phone. You have to hang up with the person, unlock the phone, check the calendar and call them back.

The battery life is poor, but I keep a charger in the car which helps a great deal.

All in all, I love my Treo 680. I have purchased additional software that I strongly recommend. They are: Launcher X(excellent), Mobil Write, Treo Voice Dialing, The Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus, Scrabble and Mars Needs Cows.

I also recommend that you keep you Treo locked with a security password. I have not found a carrier that will offer insurance on this $400 phone.

Summary: Great smartphone with a couple of annoyances.
Comment: I received the phone the next day before 3:00pm, didn't know that my order got upgraded from standard to express, which was welcomed suprise.

The good points:

*It works as a phone perfectly. Has great and very clear recepcion, not cristal clear, but very close.

*If you used a Palm OS gadget before you will be able to master the device in just a few hours or couple of days if you haven't.

*It Hot Syncs perfectly with Outlook (FINALLY!!!!), which is a great to avoid Palm Desktop (read the bad points for more on this).

*It is big, but you get rid of two gadgets. Which what I was going for, as I carried my mobile phone along with a Palm. And the full QWERTY keyboard makes up for bigger size. I mean, I can type like I would on a computer with BOTH thumbs or just one, if you have long fingers like me. But if you have big hands, short hands or really thick fingers you will have problems with this unless you use both thumbs. But it beats the stupid: press a key three to four times to get the letter or number you want on a message.

*The screen is really bright and pixel perfect. Now you can really read you is calling you and have big numbers when you dial a phone.

The bad points:

*This one is really, really, really bad... battery life. It drains the battery in a single day or if you use it constantly in a few hours. It is just ridiculous, I have to carry the car charger, leave the USB cable (it charges the phone) at hand and also the wall charger close because YOU WILL NEED ALL OF THOSE. It is just stupid to use such a low capacity battery, if you can order the 3rd party extra big battery, it is money well spent. I'm about to order two of those.

*Old Palm programs crash. If you hace lots of old Palm programs it is very likely that it will reset your phone, it is quite annoying. I have some old software that hasn't received updates and use some qwirks that aren't present in the current Palms. So I'm forced to find other alternatives and buy them.

*No WIFI! You can pay your mobile provider for Internet access, but hot spots are everywhere, Wifi is faster and cheaper too. Why do I have to pay obscene amounts of money for slow Internet access?

*Palm Desktop... ugh... why can't Palm just update that software? It is the worst software to date. The UI is terrible, looks outdated, doesn't have any new features, since when? 1995? You should use Outlook instead as Hot Sync works with it perfectly and avoid Palm Desktop at all costs, it is just not worth it.

If you are in the market for a smartphone and can live with the short battery life, no bad programed old software and no Wi-Fi then you'll be more than happy.

I am happy, even without Wi-Fi, I don't need 24/7 Internet access, but yet it is a feature that is very handy on airports or coffee shops with free wi-fi for a quick review of your e-mail.

Summary: Treo 680 review
Comment: Good product as I upgraded from the Treo 650. It is lighter, smaller and the screen is sharper. The only negative is that the battery life is much less than the 650.

Summary: Early impressions
Comment: A little hard to get working. I had just bought a laptop with windows Vista. It took a download from DocumentsToGo and Palm. Could be bigger like the TungstenC and I miss the SD card slot.

I bought it to use as a PDA and needed the QWERTY keyboard to enter lots of numbers in Excel everyday. Too bad there aren't larger PDA's with keyboards. But it's good for gathering data daily and easy to keep dry in our wet windy weather.

Seller was a champ - had to ship two units. First one didn't arrive by Priority Mail.
